The New Nikon Monarch 3
Many birders all around the world recognize the Nikon Monarch as a staple amongst birding binoculars. Nikon has complimented their line with a new Monarch 3 that offers the same great view through wonderfully-engineered glass without the dielectric coatings of the Monarch 5. You might ask, well, that will make the binocular less effective at gathering light, right? You would be correct, but a the $229 price point retail this offers a great option for those budget birders out there that may not have the extra $50 bucks for the Monarch 5 (dielectric version). Remember the former Monarch without the coatings that was being sold for $279 retail? Well, essentially, Nikon has revamped that binocular and lowered the price.
This new, sleek design has a thicker center hinge like the Nikon EDG binoculars thus creating a far more balanced binocular. We, as birders, often do not think about the balance of an optic while out in the field, but this non-quantitative specification plays a role in the overall ergonomics. The focus wheel is now ribbed with soft rubber to allow for a better grip and the eye-relief has been markedly improved. The eye-relief extends to a comfy 24 mm allowing those birders with eyeglasses to view leisurely through the optic. It comes in weighing at a slim 24 ounces to make for a weightless feel. Make sure to visit your nearest Nikon retailer to check this baby out! Good Birding to all!
