Surely Matt,

We know this photo of a duck is not a duck in eclipse plumage nor a female due to the rich coloration. This one point along helps me out immensely. The lack of strong, uniform rufous on the flanks eliminates Shoveler immediately. Male Gadwalls have gray on the flanks and this photo supports that. The white I have
seen before, but that is more likely a variable

I am confused (not exactly a first). A male Gadwall has gray flanks: is the rufous on the dabbling duck an artifact? Further, doesn't Gadwall have gray to the black undertail coverts? When do they show bright white between the undertail coverts and whatever the flank color is?
