This one point along helps me out immensely. The lack of strong, uniform rufous on the flanks eliminates Shoveler immediately. Male Gadwalls have gray on the flanks and this photo supports that. I have been interested in bird watching for many years and like the commentary on the Pygmy Nuthatch.  Several years ago I took 4 grandkids on a trip through southern Colorado and at every stop we tried to identify the birds that we saw.
